Overview
The
idyllic planet Naboo, located near the Outer Rim territories,
is populated by peaceful humans known as the Naboo,
as well as the amphibian Gungans.
Naboo's surface consists of swampy seas, extensive
grassland plains and green hills. It's river cities
are renowned for their beautiful traditional architecture
and their green belts, while the underwater dwellings
of the Gungans are a magnificent example of exotic
hydrostatic bubble-technology.
From a geological perspective, Naboo is a unique
world. It doesn't have a molten core, which would
have been a sign for an ancient planet, but is a conglomeration
of rocky formations, strewn with uncounted caverns
and networks of tunnels. These are the reason for
the many swampy lakes on the surface, which reach
down far into the structure of the planet. The native
Gungans have developed methods of transportation with
which the cave networks can be explored, but even
they do not risk to venture too far into the center
of the planet, as this region is frequented by huge
sea monsters with a remarkable appetite.
The people of Naboo are of a peaceful nature. Adulthood
and the right to vote amont the Naboo was based on
intellectual maturity rather than age. A test was
conducted regularly to determine an induvidual's readiness
to join society. The capital of the planet was Theed,
which contained the monarch's Palace. For much of
their existance, the Naboo avoided contact with the
Gungans; and for the most part were unaware of their
underwater cities. This was the result of a large
war between the two waged several centures before
the Battle of Naboo. While vital minor trading relationships
exisited the government of Naboo never officially
recognized contact
Theed
The
human capital of the Mid-Rim planet Naboo, Theed is
the largest city on the planet, and home of the Theed
Palace.
The foundings of Theed take place 800 years before
the Battle of Naboo. The city is surrounded by water
and numerous waterfalls which have formed over a millenia.
The city sits at the edge of an unusually tall steppeland.
The city has an old classic look and feel, however,
the city itself is quite modern. Theed houses a number
of royalty.
The Theed Generator is an enourmous power-producing
facility located within the Theed. During the final
decades of the Republic, the generator was in constant
use, harvesting power in the form of raw plasma energy
from the core to be used by the Naboo population and
by the Kwilaan Starport. Theed is also the home to
Theed Arms, a small-time weapons manufacturer which
supplied a number of weapons to the royalty of Theed.
Population: > 5 million (5,000,000)
Theed Palace
The
Theed Palace was the center of the Naboo government.
The palace was the largest structure among the city
of Theed. The Palace was situated on top of a clip
and was surrounded by water falls and pools. While
it had an idyllic and classical appearance, the structure
was no museum, but it was an important political center,
being where the Royal Advisory Council had meetings.
In the palace lived the monarchs of Theed, the last
one being Queen Amidala.
The palace is an immsense structure, but ornately
decorated with finishes and carvings, which present
to the outside galaxy Naboo's dedication to arts and
culture.
Deep inside the palace was a power generator which
harvested plasma energy from the planet's core and
used it for energy. Adjacent to the Palace, across
tributaries of the Solleu River was the hangar in
which the royal family maintained their starship and
the Space Fighter Corps' small fleet of N-1 Starfighters.
It was part of the royal family tradition that each
new ruler add a tower or turret to the Palace and
to enhance the beauty of existing structures. The
banqueting rotunda was built by the Earl of Vis (a
cousin of the old king.) Other features include the
hall of Perri-Teeka, a monument to a revered statesman,
Broadbery Meadow, a secluded garden reachable only
by boat; Guido's tower, an ancient structure; the
Parnelli Museum of Art, and the Virdugo Plunge, the
largest waterfall in Theed fed by the Solleu River.
A network of secret tunnels connected the palace
courtyard to the waterfalls also exist. These networks
allowed the Naboo resistance movement to retake the
Palace during the Trade Federation invation.
Purpose: Meeting place of Naboo Royal Advisory
Council, residence of ruler
Otoh Gunga
An
underwater city beneath Lake Paonga, Otoh Gunga is
the largest Gungan city, completely hidden and unknown
to the humans of Naboo. While Gungans have several
such cities, Otoh Gunga was definetly the largest
and oldest of such creations.
At first appearance, the city looks like a series
of glittering bubble-jewels. These bubbles are hydrostatic
force-fields which contain breathable atmospheres.
While rigid enough to keep water out, the force fields
are weak enough to allow a gungan (or human for that
matter) into the city.
Otoh Gunga has a sweeping architecture, and features
rectilinear (characterized by straight lines) shapes.
Building material for the city are not made by actually
grown, resulting in an appearance which looks almost
alive.
Millenia ago, the Gungans were forced to retreat
due to strife and confict beneath Lake Paonga and
construct a habitat. A vital discovery allowed the
Gungans to create their first and most magnificient
underwater cities. Gungans descovered locap roots,
which were plants which pierced through to the planet's
plasma core and metabolized the plasma, distilling
and naturally stabilizing it in the digestive process.
This safe form of plasma is stored in buds, located
on the tips of its stalks, which the gungans could
use as a source of power. The city itself is constructed
on a tremendous locap branch.
By catalyzing a raw material called bubble wort and
plasma with a secret technique the Gungans were capabla
of the permeable hydrostatic bubbles needed to keep
dry.
Otoh Gunga has expanded from a mere cluster bubbles
(known as the Ancient Quarter) to encompass an area
which was inhabited by a million Gungans. The central
district features elegant city squares, cantinas,
and sacred bubbles for the worship of Gungan gods.
During the expansion, areas such as Otoh Villages,
were Gungans lived and worked, were grown and grafted
onto the existing structure. In an effort to enhance
the city during his term, Boss Nass commissioned a
popular concourse known as the City Bigspace.
Administration within the city is done in the High
Board Room of the Gungan Rep Council. The leader of
the Gungans, Boss Nass refused to believe the Trade
Federation would discover their location, and was
forced to evacuate the city as the droids entered
Gungan territory. Upon the return to Otoh Gunga, the
city had to deal with overpopulation. Due to the new
affiliation with humans, the city became a tourist
attraction and was especially known as a spot for
honeymooning vacationers
Population: > 1 million (1,000,000)
Gungan Sacred Place
Deep
within the swamps, fields, and forests of Naboo was
a Gungan secret hideout. The Sacred Place is located
somewhere in the Lianorm Swamp, along the foothills
of the Gallo Mountins. The Sacred Place is one of
the few terrestrial places where Gungans live. The
area is used normally as a safe haven in the even
of an emergency in an underwater city. The place is
surrounded by ancient ruins and statues, many of which
depict ancient Gungan gods and goddesses.
Just before the Battle of Naboo, Queen Amidala and
the Naboo Resistance Force were led to the Gungan
Sacred Place by Jar-Jar Binks, a Gungan who was affiliated
with the humans. Through Amidala's submission, an
alliance was made between the two groups
When the senate established a new measurement regulation,
which would raise the taxation along the outer trade
routes, the credit-hungry Trade Federation protested
by blocking off Naboo. A screen of large warships
surrounded the planet, cutting it off from all supply.
The planet's leaders, Queen Amidala and Governor Sio
Bibble, were captured by the Trade Federation's driod
army.
Jedi Knights, sent by Chancellor Valorum, freed Queen
Amidala and brought her to Coruscant in order to persuade
the senate to intervene against the blockade. Not
even Naboo's representative, Senator Palpatine, was
able to put an end to the Trade Federation's bureaucratic
scheming.
Disappointed by the senates lack of ability, Queen
Amidala took the fate of her people into her own hands.
She returned to Naboo and managed to convince the
Gungans to follow her cause. Together, the two cultures
were able to resist the Trade Federation's invasion
and to bring back peace.
