GreyPawn's Time With Stratics & More! Return to TopSubmit News!Comment on this item in our forums...

My thanks to EM Stock of SOE and GreyPawn, the new SWG Community Manager, for making this interview happpen!

RainStar: Tell us about your time with Stratics.

GreyPawn: I started back in ’98 as Reporter for the Atlantic Shard for Ultima Online Stratics. I worked my way up to Lead Reporter, wandering across the shard and reporting on interesting places and new events. I left Stratics briefly for a stint as a fansite operator for the factional Council of Mages site, but later returned to my old role in reporting the news. Later, I went over to work as an Editor on the Matrix Online Stratics site where I wrote a great guide for Coders in the voice of the Architect. (Corny, but fun!) I left shortly after E3, 2005.

RainStar: Did you enjoy your role as a Seer in UO? I know many of those who played UO were upset when that program was discontinued.

GreyPawn: There is no greater exhilaration relating to an MMO I’ve found more than running an effective in-game event. I relished every second of it, and I put in way more time than I should have. The true impact of live events on players in an MMO is really very difficult to quantify, but to those who have seen it first-hand, the effect is there in a big way. There’s an element of immersion that you can only get from live events that adds so much to the gameplay experience. It’s that feeling of never knowing what’s going to happen when you log in.

I was upset when the program was discontinued, and it felt like the real magic had gone out of the game. I came back to help with the Event Moderator program when that was later introduced, but it never gained quite as much momentum. Live events are tricky to make happen, and even more difficult to justify where bottom lines are concerned. It isn’t easy to quantify immersion.

RainStar: Is your SWG username from the days of UO?

GreyPawn: Surprisingly, yes. And I still maintain an active account! (Also in LOTRO, WoW, and Second Life. “How does he have *time*?” I hear you say. He doesn’t.) I’ve preferred to keep hold of my GreyPawn nick as a way for folks to easily identify me.

RainStar: Within the rules, what is the most effective way to get a post noticed by a red name?

GreyPawn: First, I want to make sure you know that the majority of the Dev Team reads the boards, but doesn’t always have the opportunity to respond. That doesn’t mean that your posts aren’t being seen. As I think is the case with most game message boards, the Devs respond best to posts that are clearly written and constructive. They don’t have to be positive, mind you, they just need to be thought out and not just consist of a bunch of expletives. From a Community Relations standpoint, I try to cover as much ground on the boards as possible each day, Also, I try to respond to as many private messages sent my way as I can, so if you’ve got something on your mind, share it with me.

RainStar: Speaking of forums, what is going on with them? The search feature is lacking and the site is often down or extremely slow. Will the search feature ever be fixed? It's not very helpful when you enter a word and the result comes back with nothing or answers that are extremely outdated. The search should take you to the most recent answers.

GreyPawn: I understand that the hamster that runs about on the wheel in the forum server room is due to be replaced with a larger version, who has been dubbed “Sparky”. Hopefully the issues with the forums will be resolved soon as greater hamster-power is applied.

We know there have been forum issues, and we’re working to get them fixed.

RainStar: What is your character's name and what galaxy do you play on? Are you into PvP, PvE or RP?

GreyPawn: My character’s name is “GreyPawn”. Hah! You weren’t expecting that, were ya? I play on Bria, because I’m moving alphabetically through the server list. I generally go from PvE to RP to PvP throughout the course of game advancement. I like to PvE until I gain a respectable level of achievement, perhaps a modest dwelling, some decent financial backing, etc. Then I kick it ye olde school, verily, with thine RP thither and yon. After establishing a decent network of contacts as an in-character social butterfly, I lay the smack down.

This may sound like a weird way of doing things, but I’ve found that both RP and PvP have more meaning when they are applied to one another.

RainStar: What prompted you to apply for the Community Manager program when you had never played SWG?

GreyPawn: Several things! First, the strength of the community was very appealing. Let me see if I can explain this without swallowing my tongue. In most games, you have the players that just play, and the players that play and also get involved in the community. In SWG, this ratio is much higher than in other games, and an incredibly involved community was very appealing. Secondly, SWG is growing and has a lot more players than it is commonly perceived to have. As someone that pays attention to the charts and reads the industry blogs, it was kind’ve jaw-dropping. The “best kept secret” thing has great underdog appeal.

RainStar: For those wanting to get into a career such as Community Manager, what advice can you give? What cinched the job for you?

GreyPawn: My best advice is to submerge yourself where community happens – on the player association/guild level, with the fansites, and on the boards. With involvement comes experience and skill, and those are the most valuable things to look for in a Community Manager. For me, it was likely my past experience with both MMO and RTS communities that helped plant me where I am.

RainStar: What is your favorite part of the job?

GreyPawn: There was an old game for the SuperNES called “Actraiser”, don’t know if many of you will remember it or not. But you basically ran around as this little angel dude shooting arrows at monsters, making miracles happen and occasionally heading down to solid ground to take the fight to the bad guy to protect your people. At the end of a particular scene, when all the bad guys in a particular area were defeated, growth in the land below you could happen really fast. Citizens ran to and fro as you lent your powers to their industrious works. Awesome music played, and you basically just directed the expansion of your happy folks.

For me, the most rewarding part of being a Community Manager is when that little ending part happens in a community. When most of the issues have been addressed, there is no outstanding drama, and all the trolls have been defeated or gone quiet for a season. It is a rare time, mind you, but for that brief moment you can witness the incredible growth that occurs, and spend the bulk of your energy building something new rather than picking up pieces. I love that part of it.

RainStar: Anyone who has ever worked with the public on a daily basis for hours on end knows it can be frustrating at times. After a long hard day of dealing with the SWG community, what do you do to relax?

GreyPawn: It can be frustrating, but a big part of dealing with frustration from players is knowing where it comes from. Passion motivates players to get involved, and speak up about something they feel strongly enough to take to a public forum. And you can’t blame someone for passion, but you can understand and respect it. When I need to chill though, I log in and take a jaunt in my TIE Fighter, or watch some Robot Chicken.

    • The UI will now list in groups of 25. At the bottom of each list there will be a red NEXT entry. Clicking that entry will update the UI to the next 25 members in your player association. If there is not another page, the NEXT button will not display.

    • Added New "Back" button to the bottom of the UI. It resides between the OK and Cancel buttons. Clicking it will allow you to go back one page on your members list.

    • These changes will allow you to edit any member of your guild; you will no longer be constrained by the 50 member limit.

  • Structure traders are now granted a schematic for a guild registry device:

    • This device can then be used by a player not in a player association to create a player association.
    • Once a player association is created, the device is destroyed and a player association display screen is added.
    • This screen is decoration for housing; the player association leader is owner for it and it is No Trade.
    • When examined, it will give information about your player association.
    • When it is destroyed, the guild leader has the option to create a new one.

  • Player association terminals no longer spawn in player association halls or the Mustafarian bunker.
  • Player association leaders are able to set permissions on any member whether they are online or not.
  • Added functionality for guild screen to destroy and allow new leaders to create one.
  • Players can filter how you want to show your guild member names:
    • Alphabetically

    • By Permissions

    • By Titles

    • By Name (you input the name you are looking for)

  • Added several new commands:

    • -guildShowAlpha (shows member names in alphabetical order)

    • -guildShowTitle (shows all titles so you can search for member by title)

    • -guildShowPermission (shows all permissions so you can search by permissions)

    • -guildShowName (gives an input box to allow for searching through guild member names by what you type in)

    • -guildInfo (shows the guild info, same function that is on terminal)

    • -guildSponsor (allows you to sponsor someone, same functionality as on the terminal)

    • -guildChangeName (allows you to change the guild's name, same functionality as on terminal)

    • -guildDisband (allows you to disband the guild, same functionality as on terminal)

    • /guildShow will still display the list of filters you can use.

    • Also added /guildShow to take arguments as an alternative to using the full slash command; for example, /guildShow alpha will show by alphabet.

  • Player association UIs only allow one UI at a time; this is to fix potential errors with having multiple UIs out at once.
  • New cartridges crafted by structure traders can be used to change your player sssociations data screens. Cartridges are loaded by the player association leader via the radial menu while it is in their inventory.
  • Changed Guild Manipulation windows to close if a new window is requested via the remote device or slash command. For example, if you are giving permission to member A and then decide you want to sponsor someone, you can just type /guildSponsor and the old permissions UI will close and the sponsor UI will open.
  • Fixed an issue with some Mustafar Bunkers not having the option to withdraw from treasury.

    Player Cities:
  • During each galaxy restart, every player city will check and correct its citizenship list so that the mayor of the city is a citizen of only the city that she is mayor of.
  • During each galaxy restart, every player city will check and correct its citizenship list so that only the mayor and owners of declared structures within the city limits will be allowed on the citizenship list. The mayor will be notified by mail if any citizens are added or removed from this fix up. The mail will contain the subject "City Fix Up: Added Citizens" for additions and "City Fix Up: Removed Citizens" for deletions.
  • Added new Citizenship title to display what city you are a citizen of. The actual title that is displayed will be "Mayor of " or "Militia of " or "Citizen of " or "Wanderer". It takes 1 minute after a citizenship status change for the title to update to reflect the new citizenship status.
  • If you are a mayor, the Home field of the Character Sheet will display the location of the city hall of your mayoral city.
  • If you are a citizen of a city, the Home field of the Character Sheet will display the city(ies) that you are a citizen of. A '*' will appear in front of the city name to indicate you are the mayor of that city.
  • Mayors can no longer declare residence.
  • Fixed an issue where if you declare residence in a different area than your previous residence, you were not removed as a citizen of your previous residence's city.

Galactic Senate Revamp & Community Responses Return to TopSubmit News!Comment on this item in our forums...
GeneralNews - 5:54 AM PDT | Posted By: RainStar

The Galactic Senate program has been re-introduced to give players a stronger voice in the game and to help strengthen the fast-growing Star Wars Galaxies community. There are quite a few Senatorial vacancies, so check out what the program has to offer you by clicking here!

    Several clarifying notes:

-MasterCosmo has been nominated and unanimously appointed as our first Senator, the Commando Senator. Congratulations are in order!

-The state of the economy may be represented by a subcommittee of the four Trader Profession Senators and the Entertainer Senator.

-The Imperial and Rebel Senators will represent the whole of the PvP aspects for their particular faction in the Galactic Civil War.

    - You may only submit one nomination for Senator for one Senatorial vacancy.

    - The Galactic Senate forum will be the primary medium of exchange and will stay transparent to the public (in read-only setting). A private Cloakroom / Private Senate Chambers forum will be set up to conduct discreet business (potential exploits, disciplinary matters, etc.).

    GreyPawn
    Community Manager

Some responses from the community are below.

    TheWookieeKing:
If I am recalling correctly, Grand Moff Tarkin stated in Episode IV that the Senate was no more and that Governors and Moffs would rule thier planets accordingly.

So why make an offical SOE Galactic Senate and call them Senators?

    GreyPawn:
Ah, and you are correct! The Senate was dissolved at the period in time that SWG takes place. However, the function of this particular Senate is completely out of character and exists in the same space/time that these message boards here do. The role of the Senate is to provide feedback and leadership in a strictly "out of character" capacity, and so roleplay or fictional continuity isn't interupted by its presence. And to clear up any potential confusion, the "Roleplay Senator" is appointed to represent the roleplaying segment of the population, not to roleplay as a Senator.

Any resemblance to the old Correspondents program is strictly incidental. Do give the Senate a chance, and I think you'll be very pleased.

    damicatz:
I don't like the idea of having a bunch of people representing the community behind their backs in some private, off-limits forum. Either open up the senate forum or get rid of the senator program period.

    GreyPawn:
Neither do I. And you've made an excellent point here. The Senate forums will be opened shortly for read-only access. Full transparency in representation is an integral part of the establishment of power by proxy.

    MasterCosmo:
one question though, after the senator lives out their 6 month term, can they be up for re-nomination of the community finds them to be an asset to their representation?

    GreyPawn:
Absolutely. There are no term limits, but the opportunity for change in Senate leadership is there.

    Zion:
Heh, maybe you just spoiled us with the quick nomination of MasterCosmo - and yes, he deserved it more than anyone else.

I can just imagine what is going on right now...

GreyPawn: Ok, here is what we got so far for nominations.

Virrago: Ok. *reads* mm...eh....oh no....ew....oh god....jeez....Grey, is this all we have?

GreyPawn: Yeah, that's who everyone has nominated so far.

Virrago: I've banned everyone here at least once, some guys twice. And man, there are a few here that make me wonder how the hell they got nominated in the first place.

GreyPawn: Well, don't look at me; I'm new here.

    SWGmod1: Me too.

    Virrago: You are not!

SWGmod1: But I'd like to be.

Virrago: Well, you don't get to be new again.

    SWGmod1: Please?

    Virrago: No.

SWGmod1: Fine, then I nominate the guy with the rap sheet as long as my arm.

    Virrago: WHAT?

    GreyPawn: Seconded.

Virrago: You guys trying to kill me?

    SWGmod1: New guys UNITE!

    GreyPawn: Word.

    Virrago: YOU ARE NOT NEW!

    SWGmod2: Can I be new?

    Virrago: NO!

SWGmod2: Fine then, nomination thirded, and passed, go welcome our new senator, Greypawn.

    Virrago: You CAN'T do that!

    SWGmod2: Sure we can; vote's 3 to 1.

GreyPawn: Ok, I am off to notify the forum convict, er, senator of his acceptance.

Virrago: Bah, I think I am getting a migrane

    SWGmod1: New guys UNITE!

    Virrago: Oh SHUT UP!

And the comments from the Devs about Zion's funny post:

    Virrago:
    Hilarious

    GreyPawn:
Sounds about right! I don't think I've ever said "Word." though like that. I'll have to start.

And! Three new Senators got announced just today. Go see!

Chapter 7, Bug Bash & Player Concerns Return to TopSubmit News!Comment on this item in our forums...
GeneralNews - 3:29 AM PDT | Posted By: RainStar

Now that our BugBash is out on Test I'd like to chat with everyone on more details on the content and systems we have started working on for Chapter 7. We have already mentioned the big bullet points a few times, Heroic Encounters, and Collections. However I haven't delved too much into what each means.

    Heroic Encounters -
We have chosen to advance the story of our good friends from the former Village of Aurilia. Apparently all the materials and effort the players contributed helped grow the Village into a Township. This Township will be our "nexus" or gathering spot for linking up with others to go on the Heroic encounters with, obtain buffs, or just hang out. Dropships to quickly transport groups from the Township to areas near the entrances to the encounter areas should be available here. There will also be a variety of new quests and rewards will be available for helping out the people of Aurilia.

As for the encounters these should all be tuned to 8 people and yield some fun surprises. I'm not going to reveal what goes on inside the encounters until we get closer to Testing.

    Collections -
The most basic form of collection all players have been collecting since the game launched, you just know them as Badges. We have come up with a slick UI and our artists are going through and adding Badge Icons to all old and new badges. You will be able to examine another player and look out their collections if you so desire. After Badges the next level of collection is the kill collection, represented in a different page in the Collection's Journal. Killing specific creatures/NPCs will yield collection credit and eventually rewards and further collections or badges. Finally we move into objects in the world inside buildings or areas that are clicked on to collect them or objects looted from creatures/NPCs that are clicked on to collect them. Each collection usually has a reward associated with it from credits, xp, titles, to more exotic custom rewards.

A good example of a collection is mousing over a crate in a starport you notice your cursor changes to a hand, clicking on the crate yields a message that the crate has been added to your crate collection. Looking in your collection journal you notice there are 10 icons, 9 are greyed out 1 has been colored in, representing the crate you just clicked. There are 9 other crates you need to find in the galaxy to complete the crate collection. Over to the right of these icons you see a bigger icon, and mousing over it you see that completing this collection will grant you a Structure Storage Increase Crate. The reward object can be added to a structure you own to increase the number of items you can place in it.

All the little pieces are looking like it should be a fun Chapter.

    Blixtev
    Lead Designer

As always, some questions arise, here are a few from the community and the Dev's responses.

    ordio:
Looks awesome Blix! Can't wait to see more of this coming to test and then live!

Q... with the example of the storage crates, is that a real example, or just an example to let us know how it works?
And, can we do this storage crate thing more than once?

Also, glad to hear the village (township) of Aurillia is moving forward... i can't wait to see what new stuff is coming from there!! I miss that village!

    Blixtev:
I finished coding the storage crates a few days ago, the standard crate adds 100 to a house and you can put multiples on your house. Hopefully so many items people will no longer need any storage houses.

    Chimaerapall:
Can those increase house limit things be used in guildhalls? since that vet reward can't (not sure tbh though).
    And will they be tradeable?
Is it only 1 device per house, or can you place as many house limit increase devices you want in one house?
What about the current Veteran reward (I mean house device thing) will that one get an increase or?

    Blixtev:
I plan on making some tweaks so they work on guildhalls, the bigger stuctures look so much nicer with fully decorated rooms imo. They will not be tradeable, you will need to do the collections to get the storage upgrade. Right now I capped it at +5000 increase, so the design crew will have to put in a bunch of collections to get these out to you. They also stack with the 200 item vet reward.

Do remember one of the collection types is looted objects, so there will be a secondary market for many of these, ie "anyone have box 2 for the box collection quest?".

    gwaffy:
thats lame tthe vet reward is 200 but the mission one is 5000.. wtf is the point in choosing my vet reward for 200 extra items when i can just get to crates..

lame and whats my other choice cheaper respec..... i dont respec

total waste of a 4 year reward. give me 2 30k resource deeds ill be happy

    Blixtev:
Well its not like getting one object and boom here is a big increase. Its doing lots of different collections for +100 crates as the reward. So the veteran reward is still a fantastic item. Remeber our goal is to give you lots of fun things to do.

    Ceras:
Will the village have phases again that switch all 4 weeks?

    Blixtev:
There is no multi phase for the Township. I still have nightmare's about all the problems that caused.

We have multiple new rewards coming your way, that should do fun and exciting things in their own rights. I do not plan to re use any of the old Village rewards.

    Khristen:
Chapter 7 is definitely looking to be a great addition to the game! Great work and thanks to all the team!

A quick question on Bug Bash. It sounds like it is all basically on Test Center now, but are there going to be any more additions to the current list? It's a significant number of positive changes and additions (which I'm very glad to see), but I was hoping that we'd also see the inclusion of the Citizenship List bugs fix with it. Is there any updates on that front?

    DevH:
Citizenship List bug fixes are done and will make it into Bug Bash with the next update. Here's the prelimary notes for the fix, with the usual "subject to change/cancellation" caveat.

This should be in the next Bug Bash update:

Player City: During each galaxy restart, every player city will check and correct its citizenship list so that only the mayor and owners of declared structures within the city limits will be allowed on the citizenship list. The mayor will be notified by mail if any citizens are added or removed from this fix up. The mail will contain the subject "City Fix Up: Added Citizens" for additions and "City Fix Up: Removed Citizens" for deletions.

This should be in the following Bug Bash update:

Player City: During each galaxy restart, every player city will check and correct its citizenship list so that the mayor of the city is a citizen of only the city that she is mayor of.

    Wildcat_84:
And what, exactly are the rules? Each toon can ONLY declare residency in one house in one city? Or one per planet?

    DevH:
Citizenship is determined by declared structures. During galaxy startup, every city looks at all the declared structures within its city limits, and only the mayor and owners of declared structures within the city limits are allowed on the citizenship list. Additionally, during this galaxy startup fix up, it will also check (and fix, if necessary) to make sure that a mayor is a citizen of *only* the city that she is mayor of.

The intended behavior is each toon can only have 1 declared residence. We also have fix up code in place which runs when a toon logs in and enters a structure to clean up any "bad" residency issue, to fix up cases where a toon has more than 1 declared residences. Then at the next galaxy restart, any of this clean up that occurred when the toon logs in or enters a structure will be processed and the citizenship list updated accordingly.

In addition to these clean up code, citizenship list will still get updated normally in real time when you declare/undeclare/change residency in-game. If anything goes wrong and the real time update doesn't occur, it'll get fixed up during the next galaxy restart.

    Wildcat_84:
I would seriously reconsider this, at least consider allowing one residence per planet. I would NOT want to be you the day this goes live because these forums will EXPLODE... again...

This is going to leave the landscape even more cluttered, as MANY cities will be destroyed or damaged beyond repair, negating any advantage gained by the packup event.

    Blixtev:
The packup event was to help cleanup these old ghost cities, in some cases it did happen but some cities with 30+ ghost citizens were effected not at all. With only a limited amount of cities on a planet, old unused cities need to evaporate to make room for new cities.

Cities were never designed to be supported by 1 person, as we can see happening on live with cities with many ghost citizens.

Editor's Note: I'm happy that the Village will be open to the players again. Will it be as much fun as it used to be? I will hold my opinion on the new content for the Village until more information becomes available.

House Packup Friday! Return to TopSubmit News!Comment on this item in our forums...
GeneralNews - 5:46 PM PDT | Posted By: RainStar

The House Pack Up begins on Friday, June 22, 2007! The Galactic Vacant Building Demolitions Crew will be ready to begin demolition this Friday after a brief maintenance period at 2:00 PM CDT.

Any house, factory, or player association hall that has been abandoned by its owner (since April 16, 2006) has been targeted for pack up. The building sign is marked in red as "Abandoned" to indicate the structure can be demolished.

Once you see the sign with the red "Abandoned" text, open the radial menu and choose "Structure Management > Pack Up This Building" to initiate the bombing. You can pack up a maximum of five buildings every 24 hours.

If your building has been packed up, you will find it in your datapad when you return to the galaxy. Simply unpack your house in a new location and the structure will be restored with your possessions inside.

Civilians who mark ten buildings for destruction receive the Junior Wrecking Crew Worker Badge. Hard-working citizens who clear out 50 abandoned structures are recognized for their destructive talents with the Wrecking Crew Manager Extraordinaire badge.

Not only can you receive badges, but for each successful destruction of an abandoned structure, you receive one reward point. Reward points are redeemable at the Lucky Despot in Mos Eisley for in-game items that can be used for decoration.

The Galactic Vacant Building Demolitions Crew is exploding with excitement – get out there and help them clear out those buildings!

Raph Koster Replies To NGE Article Return to TopSubmit News!Comment on this item in our forums...
GeneralNews - 3:50 AM PDT | Posted By: RainStar

A recent article posted at Escapist Magazine.com provoked Raph to share his thoughts on the topic and the author.

The following post can be found at Raph Koster.com.

So, here it is, a few years later, and we’re still seeing articles on the NGE. And honestly, I’m getting a little tired of it. In this case, I actually declined to comment for the article, but there’s nonetheless a giant inset quote from me dug up from ages ago (which irritates me, honestly). I had declined because I just didn’t want to perpetuate the discussion.

Why? Well, for one, it does feel a bit like the whole thing has turned into a bit of a punching bag. For example, the article claims that SOE has not apologized. But John Smedley has gone on record with saying it was an error several times now. All sorts of motives get ascribed to all sorts of people that just don’t fit with what I know of them.

Julio Torres is not the devil — in fact, he was a hardcore Entertainer in SWG, not an RP-hater. Jeff Freeman is a smart talented designer — he did the SWG pet system, so it’s not like he was out to remove it — and NGE wasn’t his initiative anyway. Smed is a guy who cares deeply about customers, whom I have personally seen spend hours on the phone talking to just one in order to try to resolve their issues. And yet all these guys regularly get vilified in forums regardless of what their actual roles were or what they feel about the subject, in large part because their names happen to be public. In the end, it all just feels a bit unfair, in large part because only fragments of the story are even available. And the story is going to stay unavailable because of confidentiality agreements.

I know this is likely going to prove unpopular with a lot of folks who read this blog. And I am not out to defend the NGE. Rather, I’m saying that until the subject can be discussed a bit more dispassionately, it’s difficult to discuss at all. And I am as guilty as anyone of speaking provocatively about it. But I feel burned out on the whole discussion, because so little of it seems productive.

Knowing the author of the article, I’m sure that it wasn’t his intent to merely fan flames. And I know that anything I said in the past is always out there on the Net, ready to come back to haunt me. I also know that anyone whose name is publicly associated with something, like mine, or Smed’s, or Jeff’s or Julio’s, is going to be fair game. But my personal take on the issue is more nuanced than what I see in the discussions and articles, which have uncomfortable tones of pitchforks and fires. I’m thrilled that something I worked on aroused such passion in people. I’ve also had to move on.

So yeah, I’m kinda tired of reading articles about the NGE, particularly ones that paint these adversarial relationships with people I still talk to regularly and whom I know to be good people. I doubt that anyone will simply stop talking about it, but as for me, I’m staying out of it, because regardless of how I feel about the NGE itself, I think that the real lessons of it are mostly stuff that isn’t even visible to the public. (For example, IMHO the real lesson is about data mining, and not about any of the stuff that gets talked about).

The flaming of me may now commence.

Free Trial Account Restrictions Return to TopSubmit News!Comment on this item in our forums...
GeneralNews - 9:38 AM PDT | Posted By: RainStar

    Hi Folks,

I wanted to write a quick note here to explain some of the changes we have instituted with regards to the free trial accounts. As many as you have noted, we have had a large upswing in the number of 'credit spammers' in the game, advertising their credit farming websites, etc. This is not a problem unique to Star Wars to be sure, but something that all MMO's have had to deal with over the years. Without commenting in general about credit farming, we certainly do not want our players to be harassed by these folks, nor do we wish to have their Star Wars role playing immersion be ruined by such blatant non-Star Wars behavior.

Practically all of this spamming has been done through our free trial program. Our plan had been to address this immediately following the house pack-up event with a number of restrictions and alterations to the free trial. With the house pack-up running late and the spamming problem getting worse, we decided to activate the old restrictions on the trials immediately in order to end the harassment of our players. The net result was of course that free trials could no longer leave Tansari Station.

Our free trial program is incredibly successful and we do not want to keep these restrictions in place very long. We are working now on more focused restrictions that deal very specifically with those folks using the trial for nefarious commerce. These should be in place soon, and we will lift the embargo on trials and allow then to once again enjoy as much of the game as is reasonable without the ability to negatively effect our paying customers. This will include the ability to travel to the other locations in the galaxy. Folks in the trials are our future comrades and friends (well, some may become your enemy I suppose...But in a good way ), and we should welcome them.

There were a small number of verteran players in trials as well that were impacted by this, and we do apologize for the inconvienece. Rest assured that anyone who lost items due to being forced back to the station will have those items returned if they move to subscribed status.

Once again, we will be putting systems in place that will allow you to play with friends who are trying out the game. This is a great way to introduce someone to Star Wars which and we feel it is very important to facilitate this. These changes are fast tracked at this point and should be coming very soon.

    Thanks,
    DeadMeat

House Packup Postponed! Return to TopSubmit News!Comment on this item in our forums...
GeneralNews - 2:43 AM PDT | Posted By: RainStar

    Folks,

We have decided to postpone for one week the House Pack-Up event until Tuesday, June 12th. We still have a few open bugs with vendor pack-up (vendor pack-up working completely is one of the requirements for this event). While these problems are edge cases, meaning that they would happen only in odd circumstances, they are still possible and we certainly do not want to have folks lose their stuff during this event. I know that many guilds and other groups have been planning there strategies for the event, so I wanted to give folks a heads-up now to give them time to adjust their plans.

We will be adding an new step to the overall process as well. We plan on Thursday next week to 'unabandon' all structures belonging to those players that have resubscribed during the special trial period. This should give people plenty of time to check their structures and be sure that there are no errors in the houses to be packed. We are also planning to release a hotfix next Tuesday, June 5th, which address some of the current issues on live.

Once again, we are sorry that we need to postpone the event for a bit, and I hope that people can adjust their plans accordingly. We will always strive to error on the side of caution when dealing with things as important as player items in the game.

Thank you and have a great weekend,

    DeadMeat

SWG HoC Chat Logs Return to TopSubmit News!Comment on this item in our forums...
GeneralNews - 5:47 PM PDT | Posted By: RainStar

Vapor: Hello everyone. My name is David Jones and I am an Associate Producer with SOE.

DeadMeat: Hi...this is DeadMeat:. I'm the producer for SWG for SOE

Blixtev: Howdy Blixtev here, I am the Lead Designer for Star Wars Galaxies.

Loche: Hi all. I am Jesse Benjamin a SWG Designer

Shadowbrak: Good evening all. My name is Travis Hicks, Systems Designer for Beast Master abilities and the chapter 6 combat changes.

Brannoc: Will there be more scaling down of Elite mobs in non-instanced areas to make CL90 characters able to take them on again without backup?

Shadowbrak: We are happy with the difficulty of the high end elite balance. Creatures in the 30-75 range are currently operating above their intended difficulty and will see some more adjustments.

ArkonPhoenix: Regarding legacy pets and pulling DNA from stuffed pets, any chance we can change it to a one time thing per stuffed pet and NOT destroy our beloved pet in the process?

Blixtev: Right now we want the Beast Master's to choose between making a "combat pet" or a "decoration pet". If we didn't the market would be quickly flooded with legacy pets as there is no reason not to make every legacy pet into a combat pet.

ableekertomorrow: Are there any future plans to create an in-game chat channel to help with grouping? The forums are lacking the majority of players.

DeadMeat: Yes...We will add a LFG channel. This will come out before or as part of Chapter 7.

The entire chat log for tonight, May 31st, 2007 can be found at this link.

6 Questions with CraigerRay (Droozy) Return to TopSubmit News!Comment on this item in our forums...
GeneralNews - 9:56 AM PDT | Posted By: CraigerRay

Love em or hate em, he's one of Eclipse's greatest! (in his own mind!) This week I interview Droozy!

Stratics: What got you into playing SWG?

Droozy: Well, a few friends I knew at school would always talk about it, like "Omg I cant wait to go home, I'm going to master pistoleer today" and come in the next day like "Hey remember yesterday when this happened" or whatever. I just wanted to check it out really, plus, it seemed like quite a few friends IRL were playing, so it made sense.

Stratics: You left SWG Temporarly to focus more on school, how is that going for you?

Droozy: It's going pretty darndeded good, the exams are almost over, I have the last one on Friday 15th June, and after that, I have the whole summer to do whatever the hell I feel like. But yeah, quite well, how about you?

Stratics: You're a GAT'er, explain to us what that is.

Droozy: If I had a [Insert your currency here] for every time I was asked that one..I would have 10 [Insert your currency here]s. Basically, a GATter, is..being an elite troll. No, it's not that. It's hard to explain, there are what we used to call GAT Leaders, and I was one, we would be iconic GATers of the period, we would flame noobs, make some random comments constantly, and if there was a hint of a female around It's bombarding them with questions. But it's a lot to be a GATer, you have to abide by the rules..you CAN'T talk about SWG there, you can't use the slashie (//), and just some other stuff. We like to WFN, scare n00bs, play ch3ss , and swg. Of course, the most important part about being a GATer is the post count. There's an old rule we always have, the higher your post count, the better you are. If you got your post count by :O posts, and no actual content to most of your posts, we hate you, we despise you, and you just won't be welcome. Other then that, post count or not, we will love you. Best thing about the GAT is though, we always pull through for each other, like when I did my first HDR show, a few came down to support me, and I would be there for them too, but I'm pretty sure most are gone now.

Stratics: Have you tried Chapter 6 yet?

Droozy: Nah, I dont have a toon to play on to muck about with this BM stuff. It sounds cool, but personally, I would feel bitter if I saw everyone moaning about no CH, and then nobody actually using it when it came back as BEEEASSSTTT MAASSTEERRR. On my return, I want to remake one of my toons and have them something related to Pokemon, because thats what Beast Master reminds me of. SWGcreatures..GOTTA CATCH EM ALL!!

Stratics: When do you expect to make your Full Time return?

Droozy: Never. -CU- is still here, and they suck. Nah kidding, well, I never got to really try SWG out in my trial, so I'll definately be back for at least one month to try stuff out. And that will PROBABLY be in a few weeks, 3-4 weeks maybe. Hopefully. If I remember.

Stratics: What else do you like to do when you're not playing SWG?

Droozy: Astronomy, rocket science, quantum physics, reading books, making robots, killing people, usual stuff.

Watching TV, barbeques, going to the park, just laughing and hanging about really.

Oh yeah, hi to my LOK family tree, and everyone doing the pvp thing, thats big, I'm going to pwn you all in a few weeks. <3

Join me next time when I interview our very own Carmisa!

Chapter 6: “Masters of the Wild” Publish Notes! Return to TopSubmit News!Comment on this item in our forums...
GeneralNews - 4:29 AM PDT | Posted By: RainStar

    New Features

    Storyteller

Enhance your player-driven stories and adventures with a new series of props, effects, and attackable NPCs. You may place these objects in player cities or in the wild on non adventure planets. You will have to invite other players to your story before they will be allowed to attack NPCs or open containers you have placed.

To begin telling your story, purchase storyteller tokens from Storyteller Vendors located in NPC theaters across the galaxy. To find a theater near you, open your planetary map (the V key by default) then from the right-hand menu choose Guild Halls and then Theater. Right-click the theater nearest you and make a new waypoint to guide you to your destination. Use the storyteller button in your command browser, or type /storyteller, to list all the Storyteller commands!

    Beast Master
Beast Master Expertise is an exciting new feature in Chapter 6. These are new creature-centric abilities available to all players, regardless of profession or level, through a third expertise tree. Harvest DNA from the wild, obtain and craft enzymes, and incubate your fully customizable creature! Adventure in the wilds to learn abilities and level up your pet. See the Friday Feature posted on April 20th for detailed instructions on Incubation.

    Beast Incubation
  • Players are limited to one active incubator unit per character. Incubators must be placed in a player structure to activate. Picking up the Incubator unit will cleanse any active experiments. The length of time between experimentation sessions is based on Incubator Functionality rating and purchased expertise boxes.

    Beast Loyalty and Happiness
  • Make sure your pet is kept happy through craftable foods, tricks, and planetary travels. Keeping your pet happy in the long term will enable it to learn more abilities.

    Beast Toolbar
  • All Beast commands that your beast is eligible for will be automatically added on the pet toolbar. Right click an ability to toggle it as an auto-repeating attack. The beast will perform the ability if it has enough action and the cool-down has expired. Two beast dispositions on this bar toggle your pet between defending you if attacked and ignoring attacks on the master. You must have training in Beast Master to use any ability beyond ‘stay’ and ‘follow.’

    Beast Leveling
  • Beasts level on the master gaining combat experience. The enemy NPC must con green or higher for the beast to gain experience. If you wish to keep your pet at their current growth level, use the radial option to toggle beast experience gain off.

    Beast Death
  • If your beast perishes in combat use the "Revive Beast" ability granted in the first expertise box of Beast Master.

    Creature Mounts
  • Calling a creature mount will now place you upon its back automatically. Dismounting from a creature mount will now auto-store the mount.

    Legacy Pets
  • All legacy pets in player datapads now have an option to "stuff" them for display in your home. Stuffed pets may also be used in the Incubation process if you wish them to live again. Stuffed pets receive bonuses in the Incubation process.

    Wild Creature Special Abilities
Going hand-in-hand with the new Beast Master system, wild creatures have new specials attacks and combat abilities. Some of these abilities are learnable by the player when attacking these creatures. These abilities can then be trained to your Beast if they have the appropriate number of skill points and are of the correct creature type. Be wary going into the wilds!

    Rebel Theme Park
New adventures await those who work for the Rebel Alliance! Visit C-3PO on Corellia to begin them.

    Foraging
Foraging has been updated to work with Beast Master

    Rules of Foraging
  • After attempting to forage in a location, you must move at least 5m to another location before attempting forage again.
  • After a successful forage, you cannot forage in that spot again this session (per character).
  • You have a 50% chance to successfully forage an item and a 50% chance to get nothing.
  • Foraged items include Bait, Lyase Enzymes, and Treasure Maps.

    Treasure Maps
  • The major differences between this version of treasure maps and the treasure map functionality available to players at launch in 2003 include the following:
  • The enemies scale to the combat level of the player attempting to extract the treasure unless the player is below or above the map max level.
  • The enemies scale in number and combat level based on the player attempting to extract the treasure while in a group.
  • The treasure extracted is actually valuable to players between the treasure min/max levels.
  • Credits are not part of the extracted treasure and nothing is divided between the player and other group members (unless manually traded).

    The Azure Cabal
Look for your contact at the cantina in Theed to learn more about the Azure Cabal, a new quest series.

    Chapter 6 Publish Notes

    Mounts and Vehicles

  • Mounts/vehicles: You can no longer call a mount or vehicle while rooted.
  • Vehicles: You can no longer enter a vehicle while rooted.

    Combat Changes
There have been significant changes to the internal workings of our combat engine. Game play for the end user should remain unchanged, but some new results are possible once you pull the trigger.

    New Values
  • Miss
    • NPCs and players with ranged weapons in Auto-Aim mode have a base 5% chance to miss their target. Factors such as debuffs and movement increase the player’s chance to miss. Buffs and the strength stat reduce the chance to miss.

    • The base miss chance for melee and Manual-Aim mode is 0%.

  • Dodge
    • Dodge is a defensive attribute that gives a chance to avoid incoming damage. On a successful roll, the attack will be treated as a miss and no damage will be applied.

  • Block
    • Block is a defensive attribute that has a chance to mitigate additional damage based on the defender’s block score. Block mitigation is applied after armor so it is possible to reduce incoming damage to 0 with a high enough Block Value.

  • Parry
    • Parry is a melee defensive attribute that will allow the defender to negate a successful attack. Normal parry can only block other melee attacks, though Lightsaber weapons can parry ranged attacks as well.

  • Strikethrough
    • Strikethrough is a type of critical which instead of adding damage will bypass a percentage of your target’s armor. The Strikethrough amount is based on the attacker’s Strikethrough Value.

  • Evasion
    • Evasion is a defensive attribute that will allow the target to avoid a percentage of damage from an Area Effect attack. The amount of percentage evaded is determined by the defender’s Evasion Value.

  • Punishing Blow
    • A punishing blow is a type of critical only available to NPCs that do 150% damage. Elite and Boss category NPCs (as well as those higher level than the player) can land a punishing blow.

    Updated Values

    Glancing Blows

  • The damage reduction from a glancing blow has been reduced from 96% to 60%. In addition, Elite and Boss category NPCs (as well as those higher level than the player) have a natural chance to receive a glancing blow.

    Devastation
  • The Commando heavy weapon attribute Devastation damage bonus has been reduced from 200% to 150%.
  • Heavy Weapons
  • Base Heavy Weapon damage has been reduced from 115% to 100%.

    Damage Over Time
  • Damage caused by Damage Over Time (DoT) effects are now reduced via armor protections as indicated below:
    • Bleeding - Cold Protection

    • Poison - Acid Protection

    • Disease - Cold Protection

    • Fire - Heat Protection

    • Acid - Acid Protection

    • Energy - Electricity Protection

    • There is now a secondary resistance check on each DoT "tick" that will give a chance to resist for partial damage.

    Armor
Different armor types add an increase resistance to certain DoT types based on the number of slots covered by that armor type. The effect becomes most pronounced when wearing a similar type of armor over all slots that normally offer protection.
  • Bleeding - Recon Armor
  • Poison - Battle Armor
  • Disease - Recon Armor
  • Fire - Assault Armor
  • Acid - Assault Armor
  • Energy - Battle Armor

    PvP Damage Reduction
  • The Player vs. Player damage reduction has been reduced from 25% to 0%.

Direct Target vs. Area Effect Combat Results
  • Hit Types for a direct target attack are Miss, Dodge, Parry, Block, Glancing, Hit, Strikethrough, Critical, and Punishing Blow.
  • Hit Types for Area Effect attacks are Glancing, Block, Evade, Critical and Punishing Blow.
  • Note that most Heavy Weapons are treated as Area Effect attacks.

    Player Attributes
The way in which player attributes feed into the combat formula has been altered:
  • Stamina and Constitution remain unchanged.
  • Precision: Affects Parry, Block Chance, Critical Hit Chance and
  • Strikethrough Chance.
  • Agility: Affects Dodge, Parry and Evasion Chance.
  • Strength: Affects Block Chance, Block Value, Hit Chance, and adds a damage bonus to melee attacks.
  • Luck: Affects Dodge Chance, Evasion Chance, Evasion Value, Critical Hit Chance, Strikethrough Chance and Strikethrough Value.

    NPC Combat
  • Creature-type NPCs now have the ability to perform special attacks.
  • NPCs will now be less inclined to leave the area while fighting indoors.
  • The idle time between decisions for NPCs has been removed.

    NPC Statistics
  • Normal class NPCs above level 10 have gained an Armor Rating.
  • The Armor Rating gain scale for Elite and Boss class NPCs has been increased.
  • The Damage Value gain scale for Normal, Elite and Boss class NPCs has been increased.

    Other Combat Changes
  • Personal Shield Generators (PSGs) will now take armor diminishing returns into consideration.
  • Personal Shield Generators (PSGs) no longer errantly double the protection you receive against any damage that has an elemental component.
  • Enabled root and snare resistance for a number of high end creatures
  • Area Effect attacks now have a chance to trigger reactive procedural effects.
  • Reactive procedural effects are now normalized based on attack speed.
  • Jedi robes are counted as "Recon" armor for the purposes of DoT resists.
  • The DoT absorption cap has been lowered to 65%.
  • You no longer lose action or activate cooldown timers when attempting to use a self-only heal while you are at full health.

    Traders
  • Geothermal Survey Device draft schematics added to all traders.

    Structure Traders
  • Geothermal Energy Generator draft schematics have been added to structure traders.

    Munition Traders
  • Added 14 new draft schematics. These are "Dietary Supplements" for beasts.
    • These supplements are used to greatly increase a beast’s experience gain.
    • Only beasts under level 75 can benefit from these.
    • There are two experimentation lines, one for charges and one for the actual experience bonus.
    • Bonus is a straight percent. If you craft a supplement that had 500, that means the beast will get 500% bonus.
    • Each supplement works on different types of creatures. The description for each supplement lists what beast types it works on.

  • Domestic Traders
  • 1 new draft schematic added. This is a sub-component needed for crafting Beast Dietary Supplements.
  • Domestic Traders can now create 12 new food substitutes used to feed animal companions.

    Other Changes

    Content

  • Changed quest reward for quest "Tasty Dried Critters" to give 90% quality Chuba DNA.
  • Mustafar: Koseyet Mining Camp: Players can no longer damage mining structures.
  • Mustafar: Koseyet Mining Camp: Updated buff effects for High Morale and Low Morale.

    GCW
  • Reduced proc chance on the GCW reactive health and action restoration stims.
  • Periodic bonus from GCW regions should be granted more reliably.

    Miscellaneous
  • Buffs: The Favor of the Elder buff has had a particle and audio effect added to its activation.
  • Bug Fix: Abilities that consume a percentage of action will now use the player’s base action value.
  • Bug Fix: The Jedi Expertise “Anticipate Aggression” now correctly reduces damage by the stated amount.
  • Chat: a default BeastMastery chat channel has been created.
  • Droids: Droids can only guard their master.
  • Droids: Guard command should allow droids to auto-defend their master.
  • Loot: Added Chu-Gon Dar recipe for the Domesticator, Subduer, Subjucator, Tamer and Master Taming Necklace.
  • UI: New elite target status window
  • UI: Target, self, and pet status displays can now display two rows of buffs/debuffs.
  • UI: Target and self status displays can now display ten buffs/debuffs in a single row.

    Professions
  • Bounty Hunter: Intimidate Marks 2 and above now should have particles and sound associated with them.
  • Commando: Base of Operations now works on Jedis wearing Jedi robes.
  • Commando: Flame throwers now produce devastating hits.
  • Commando: Cryoban Grenade 2 changed to use a cryoban grenade and particle effect.
  • Jedi: The ability “Saber Block” will now increase parry chance by 10%.
  • Jedi: Expertise “Improved Saber Block” will now improve chance to parry by 5% per point.
  • Jedi: Expertise “Stance Saber Block” renamed “Defensive Fighting”. “Defensive Fighting” is a passive 10% increase to parry chance independent of stance.
  • Jedi: Defensive “Stance” line improves chance to receive a glancing blow.
  • Jedi: Offensive “Focus” line changed to provide a Strength bonus, and increase critical hit chance.
  • Jedi: Expertise Reactive Response returns action based on the unmitigated damage value.
  • Medic: Stasis now increases dodge and evasion chance instead of a glancing blow bonus.
  • Medic: Stasis now also applies a short "Cure Affliction" DoT removal effect when used.
  • Medic: The Nerve Gas Canister, Baleful Miasma, and Trauger Gas Canister no longer use a dust devil particle effect. They now use a yellow miasmic fog.
  • Medic: Bacta Bomb was using too many particles. The particle count has been lowered.

All 6s and 7s. Return to TopSubmit News!Comment on this item in our forums...
GeneralNews - 11:51 PM PDT | Posted By: gabeknight

Hi folks. Thought I'd drop in with some tasty tidbits I've picked up recently.

    Chapter 6:
...is being held back till next week. The reason? The devs found a couple of last-minute bugs they wanted to take care of before releasing Chapter 6 to Live, so it's going to miss today's patch window. The next likely window for Chap. 6 is Tuesday 22nd. DeadMeat has apologized for the delay, but says that he would rather not release the Chapter until it is as polished and clean as it can be. Feel free to head over to the SWG forums and flay him alive - if his bosses haven't already done it for you.

    Chapter 7:
So, with Chapter 6 almost out of the gate, it's time to look ahead to Chapter 7. My leet Dev Tracker skills have been put to use, and I can reveal a few things that will be making an appearance in Chapter 7.

    • First up, we have the revamped Imperial themepark. This will include a complete reworking of the missions, new rewards, and GCW points for completing the tasks.
    • NEW "Heroic" level mobs and quests! That's right, no more killing 10,000,000 Tulrus' or doing HK-47 for the bazillionth time. We might actually have something to do in-game after this is introduced.
    • Collections. For anyone who's played EQ2 you'll know all about how these work - though the SWG Devs are hoping to expand on that system so you aren't just running around grabbing "shinies" off the ground. For anyone who doesn't know about collections, the idea is that you complete various tasks or loot various items that eventually form a collection. You can then turn in that collection for rewards such as credits, items, buffs, etc.

Everyone's favourite server infrastructure programmer, DevH, has started a brainstorming discussion regarding the problems caused by not having enough room for stuff in your houses and how it might be solved via the collection system.

Big B (aka Blixtev) has said that the item limit issue will be resolved in an upcoming chapter, though it's too early to tell if he will consider DevH's proposal for extra storage via the collection system.

Well, that's all I've got for you for now. Check back to SWG Stratics soon, though, as we'll try and bring you all the latest news and rumours from that galaxy far, far away (unless you already live in Austin, TX) as they happen.

6 Questions with CraigerRay (Eponine) Return to TopSubmit News!Comment on this item in our forums...
GeneralNews - 9:23 AM PDT | Posted By: CraigerRay

For this weeks Interview, I interview a popular girl across the Eclipse Community! Eponine!

Stratics: Give us the history of your characters?

Eponine: Well.. lets see, I started out first in Bloodfin, but came here shortly after- in summer 03, to join this Norwegian guild I had been hearing about. Called Norwegians In Space (NiS). They were living right outside Moenia, and this was a time Moenia was a buzzling little town, full of life. Mostly rebels, grinding factionpoints, and I recall Juliet (imp pvper) standing by the rebel recuiter making grinding hell for us poor newbie rebels with kicking our behinds everytime we came to pick up another mission, haha! Around the same time I met Elewo who was a guildie, K'vera and Yand who had around the time formed the band TalusMoon, and it peaked my interesst in becoming a dancer on Eponine. Later on I joined Talusmoon upon mastering dancer, and it was some of the most fun I've had in the game.

Sometime later my guild NiS disbanded, and I joined them in merging with Guardians of Lok, in the pvp active city of Purgatory. And later on Talusmoon also sadly disbanded... But after talking to Deliah and Leilani a few months later, I joined astralfantasia, who had a smashing event that marked the end of pre-cu,the Great grand ball of Theed

I left the game like many others, during the NGE, but came back again in summer 06- to form a band myself - Totaleclipse. And were about to have a concert in 2 days! :D

Stratics: What's your favorite thing to do while in game?

Eponine: Ohhh, many things. Talking to friends naturally the most of all hehe. But I enjoy to roleplay, I enjoy working with the band, and doing smaller events when I can and have the time.

I dont honestly do much combat. But I miss CH and BE like I'm sure many others do, I was both, and looking forward to chapter 6!

Stratics: Tell us about the guild LOK and what it's all about?

Eponine: Well, I joined LOK 2 1/2 years ago, and back then it was a high profiled PVP guild. There were imperials coming to PVP in Purgatory everyday. There was some great times, and I met some awsome fun people hehe. Most of those sadly left the game.

And upon my return to the game in 06, LOK was mostly abandoned except for a few loyal guildies. We had a few friends of mine joining then, and it slowly grew again, letting more friends of guildies into LOK. And now were a quite active guild, not really PVP related anymore, but alot more rounded and mixed. With a bit of everything, like PVP, Space, RP, PVE and so on.

I was made councilor of LOK back in summer 05, so when I returned it was natural to take that role again.

Stratics: Can you think of anyways that you would like to see the Developers improve the game?

Eponine: Many ways. I loved pre-cu personally, but I can see that with how far NGE has been developed now its very unlikely for that to happen hehe. I do enjoy the game as it is now. But I'd have to say, any way the game can become deeper and give a certain freedom to the players so they have possibilities of being creative and creating individuality is a good thing.

Stratics: I hear that you're from Norway, (I'm pretty sure, correct me if i'm wrong) why play on an American server like Eclipse instead of an European Server?

Eponine: Actually, back when I joined SWG there wasnt any european servers. Back then Eclipse was the unofficial euro server, and like I said above, I joined eclipse to be a part of that crazy norwegian guild :D

Stratics: What do you like to do when you're not playing SWG?

Eponine: Hanging out with friends most of all, I'm quite social I think, and love meeting new people.

Besides that, drawing, painting, photography etc and general creative things is something I've always done alot, since a kid. And I've studied art and art history for years. So I do that quite abit in my spare time. I also love to go out and dance hehe, I used to dance ballet also for many years.

Join me next week as I interview the one, the only, Droozy! Have a great weekend!

Happy Thursday everyone! This week for "6 questions with CraigerRay" my guest will be Amanda143 from the Eclipse server!

Stratics: Tell us a little bit about the history of yours Characters in Star Wars Galaxies?

Amanda143: It seems I could write a book about that. I'll try to be much more brief. I created Ma'at on eclipse server in August of 2003. I think it was the first week that I found Anchorhead, and became rebel. I rarely left. I ground out entertainer/musician in that cantina and with my extra skill points I tried fencer, rifleman, and Teras Kasi so that I could participate in all the PvP action there. It wasn't long before I joined my first guild, AotOR (avatars of the old republic). When player cities came out, we made our home on Lok in the town of Ratava. In early 2004 I took a brief hiatus to make my own city and guild on the Flurry server. My guild TYR, joined up with Xeo's and the Antarian Rangers to run a town called Antaria. I made my character there a Tailor/Architect and also Imperial. After about 6 months I went back to Eclipse when Bhaylor and Devina asked me to take over as mayor of Purgatory (on my newly made combat character Ba'st), and become a councilor. Kaoru and Bahylor had convinced me to join LOK and I made a lot of great friends there and had a lot of fun times. (I LOVE EPONINE!!) In 2005 I left to join those krazy WOOKies on Tat. By this time though, I was really wanting to go Imperial. Smurg would not have me though, so Devina convinced me to join another guild with him, Valor. Valor was an awesome guild, and with the advent of the NGE, I was forced to give up my beloved TKM/Pikeman to go Jedi on Ba'st (by this time, Ma'at was a full temp entertainer). But, I still wanted to be imp so in 2006, Smurg finally allowed me to join -CU-. Since then, the time has really flown. Epo and I had been discussing starting a band since Talus Moon folded so we started Total Eclipse. Our first gig was at the Eclipse Grand Ball thrown by Myre of -CU-. Dues, of Hyper-Drive Radio fame, graciously allowed me to take over as mayor of Xanadu Bay, to recreate it as an entertainer town once again (previously home to Nabooty Entertainment), and it became the home of Total Eclipse Entertainment. Since then, it has all been fun and games! Was that brief enough? =P

Stratics: What's your favorite thing to do in-game?

Amanda143: Entertain of course! Total Eclipse and Talus Moon Bands have made this game, for me, much more fun than it would have been if I just participated in pve/pvp. I also like being a mayor/politician. Xanadu Bay is the third town I've been the mayor of. If it hadn't been for those two aspects, I probably would have left the game long ago.

Stratics: Tell us a little bit about Corporate Universal.

Amanda143: Wow, what can I say about these guys? When I was rebel, I couldn't stand them. But, I could always count on them to be respectful in pvp. They made great enemies but they are even better friends. I bugged Smurg for nearly a year after I left LOK to let me into -CU-. They were the only imperial guild I really considered even though I didn't know most of their members. Carmen and Smurg were big reasons why I wanted to join. Now I know that all of them are great, except that Nacon guy. Also, I know the leader (Affinity), doesn't take crap and I love that about her. No drama in this guild! In march I celebrated my one year anniversary with -CU- and FES in general. I hope to remain a member for a long time.

Stratics: What are your views on Chapter 6 so far?

Amanda143: As with every chapter, there are pro's and con's. I believe though, that this is what we have been BEGGING SOE to do for so long. Not only will this free up valuable real estate around major cities, but as a mayor of a very old city, this will help clear up abandoned structures and other towns as well.

Stratics: Where do you see SWG heading in the future?

Amanda143: This is a hard question for me because I have seen so many changes to the game since lauch. SOE is really good at doing things that are unexpected. I hope that SWG will be around for years to come. It is really any body's guess to how long that will actually be with the current subscriber rates.

Stratics: What do you like to do when you're not playing SWG?

Amanda143: I am a psychology student right now so that occupies lots of my time but I love to travel and take photo's. In the spring here in Texas I like to storm chase as well. I've been doing loads of that recently. Other than that, I try to get in some Sims 2 time and occasionally log into Guild Wars.

Join me next time as I interview Eponine from the guild LOK! Have a good week everyone!

Acera: when is ch 6 coming out?

DeadMeat: Should be hitting the test center early next week.

Jiwarri: Will we be able to chose the color of the pet, like bio-engineers under the old system could?

Loche: Yes, you can color your pet during incubation. Oh and on the color, your pets color will have significance

Fariq_Asaka: Is the Rebel Themepark still scheduled for 6 and what info can you give us about it?

Blixtev: Still on track for an updated Rebel themepark, hopefully y'all will enjoy the new quest content! No details beyond play it out.

telexx: Greetings. I was wonder if this Beast Master profession will be comparable to the first CH that was pre-CU, or the revamped one you released before removing it. I really hope it's the original version. Thanks for bringing it back regardless...

Blixtev: The Beast Master system would beat up and take the lunch money away from the old CH system no matter what era the CH system. The team has done a stellar job creating one of the most in depth systems I've seen in an MMO. Just wait until you see it in action. I'm excited about it as you can tell =)

Noise: With the new "sub-class" of Beast Master will we see additional sub-classes like this in the future?

DeadMeat: I certainly hope...We have Gardener on our list down the road as something we would like to try. There are a ton of opportunities there, and if Beast Master works as well as we hope, I can imagine others being proposed.

Vader's orders are to clear the abandoned structures from ALL of the planets on this list.

He doesn't want any more rebel scum using abandoned buildings as safe houses or setting up ambushes for our ground troops.

"But what will the citizens say when we start blasting their neighbor's houses? Won't there be political ramifications?"

"Did you hear me colonel? You have your orders. If you see a potential problem, then handle it! Are we clear?"

"As soon as you know what you are going to do, call me on the comm and let me know what you intend to do. I'd hate to have to "promote" one of your Lieutenant Colonels..."

"YES SIR!" Colonel Ekirk crisply snapped a salute to the Admiral.

After pacing back and forth for a few pensive moments, Colonel Ekirk sat down at his desk and started scanning his list of Imperial-approved contractors.

    "Hmmmm....what's this?"

In a flash of inspiration, Ekirk punched a few commands into the terminal to confirm his thoughts and called the Admiral on the com-link.

    "Admiral, I have a plan."

"I just reached my shuttle. Your plan better make me tingle with happiness Colonel! Bringing me the poorly thought out plan of a desperate man would be your last mistake."

"No sir. I have a sound plan. Not too long ago, an overly ambitious demolitions expert contacted me, hoping to be added to our approved contractor list..."

    "Overly ambitious?"

"Yes sir. He likes to blow things up."

    "Go on..."

"He has a small firm called Galactic Vacant Building Demolitions . They work with the Hidden Daggers to destroy buildings by aerial bombardment. Their ships have concussion weapons mounted on them so they can launch a bombardment from low orbit, destroy the empty buildings and quickly move on to the next system."

"This has potential Colonel Ekirk. I have one concern though. How will they identify which houses are truly abandoned? We don't want the Emperor to lose face with his citizens."

"That's covered sir. All we have to do is send out a propaganda message over the holonet. We'll send a broadcast spouting off something to the effect that the rebellion needs "the people's help." We can call it the G.V.B.D.M. or some other nonsense. Once the citizens finds out about the "Galactic Vacant Building Demolishing Movement", they will gladly help us identify abandoned structures.

We'll also transmit the real message to our own troops who are already tracking empty structures. Then this crew will come out of orbit, demolish the building and move on to the next one."

With a stern voice, the admiral put Colonel Ekirk to the test, "And how will you avoid rebel propaganda from labeling this a covert operation and turning it against us?"

"I've already covered that too Admiral. The regional governors will be ordered to reward citizens for their efforts. Some will receive merit badges and others will be rewarded with items we've confiscated from smugglers. It won't cost the Empire a single credit and our Imperial Information Council will make sure news of the Emperor's generosity is all over the holonet.

"Excellent plan Colonel Ekirk. Make it happen."

    House Pack-Up FAQ

Which player accounts will have their structures packed up?

Star Wars Galaxies accounts that have been inactive since April 17, 2006 will have their structures packed up (an account that has not been an active, paying, validly subscribed account since April 17, 2006).

What is the inactive account time frame?

If your Star Wars Galaxies service has been inactive since April 17, 2006 and you do not re-subscribe by May 31, 2007, your houses, PA halls, factories and associated assets will be packed up into your inventory and removed from the game servers at 11:59 PM PDT on June 5, 2007.

Will the owners of these structures be notified in advance?

An email will be sent out to notify players in case they want to return to Star Wars Galaxies and claim their structures.

Which structures are being packed up?

  • Houses, Player Association Halls and Factories will be packed up.
  • Civic structures (player city buildings) are not going to be packed up.
  • Harvesters will decay and disappear from the game as normal.

What will happen to a structure and its contents after it has been removed?

Structures will be packed up and placed into the owner's datatpad. They will be available when/if they reactivate their account.

What will happen to vendors inside of a structure that is flagged for removal?

Vendors in the packed up house will also be packed up into the owner's datapad.

Will all flagged structures be removed at once?

House pack-ups will be initiated by players. We'll have more info for you soon on how the event will work.

Will flagging structures for pack-up happen as an ongoing process or will this be a one-time event?

Structure flagging and pack-up is going to be a one time event and will be ongoing as is necessary.

How will house pack-up affect the citizenship of Player Cities?

Cities will lose registered / declared citizens. As this happens, mayors will have to rock the vote and bring in new citizens.

Will structure admins, mayors, and other players be able to see which structures have been flagged for removal?

Players will be able to see a sign on any structure that has been flagged for removal.

This will give mayors a chance to make all the necessary arrangements for their city. Players on the admin list will also be notified that a structure has been flagged.

Can structure admins do anything to prevent the pack-up of a flagged structure?

No. Only the owner of a structure will be able to prevent a structure's pack-up, however admins will be notified that a structure has been flagged so they can reclaim their items.

If I am on a structure's admin list and regularly use the building, will it be flagged for pack-up since I am using the structure?

Every structure is flagged for pack-up based on the owner's account, not a structure admins account. If the owner's account has been inactive during the time frame listed above then the structure will be flagged and packed-up.

Will structure admins be allowed to take ownership of a structure if it is flagged for removal?

Only the structure's owner can transfer ownership to another player. Customer Service Representatives will not transfer the ownership of structures to structure admins or other players.

How will civic structures for player Cities be affected by the housing pack-up?

Civic structures (City Halls, Clone Centers, Shuttleports, etc.) are part of the player city and not an individual player account. If a city loses the required rank needed for a structure, then the affected structures are destroyed but not as specifically as part of the housing pack-up effort.

What will happen to player owned city structures (cantinas, medical centers and theaters) that require a specific city rank if the player city falls below the required level?

Player-owned structures, once placed, will remain even if the city no longer exists. The rank requirement is only for structure placement and will not be packed-up.

If these player-placed civic structures are packed-up after a city has lost rank, the structure can only be re-placed in a city that has the required rank.

Will trial account structures remain un-flagged for a year or will they be flagged sooner?

Right now there is no differentiation between the two types of structures.

To all of you; my friends,

We've had a long and fantastic adventure together, but my time as the Community Relations Manager for Star Wars Galaxies has come to end.

With that being said, it's important for me to also tell you that nothing crazy is going on. The game is fine, I'm fine...we're all fine here (how are you? .

I'm telling you this because my departure is not a sign of the apocalypse. Nothing dire is happening with SWG...as a matter of fact, SWG has a bright future. There are some really exciting new features and improvements coming up (soonTM), the team reads the forums every day and DeadMeat has his finger on the pulse of the community.

I'm satisfied that the game is in a good place and going in a really great direction. That gives me the opportunity to catch my breath and rest up a bit. Since my only plans right now are a little R&R, I'm not sure when or where, but you'll see me when I come out of hyperspace.

Before I punch the coordinates into my nav computer, there are some things that I'd like to share with you as part of my last red-name thread...

    This is an amazing community.

From all walks of life and all types of interests, one thing is for sure, this is a really amazing community.

There are talented artists and writers, a lot of excellent role playing communities, lots of great PvP events, pilot guilds and all sorts of great people on all of the galaxies who love to play the game. Don't be shy, get out there and meet new folks.

SWG is a great big sandbox and every new person you meet is a new horizon and a new opportunity for fun and exciting experiences on the forums and in-game.

    Be Excellent to Each Other.

On the other side of the keyboard, we're all real people. Please have patience with your fellow community members. Don't tear down your neighbor and if you feel your blood pressure rising in a thread, try to walk away and take a deep breath. Relax and remember that it's about the fun.

"No, you can't have my stuff!"

I will always love this game and this community. I'll still be playing Star Wars Galaxies so no, you can't have my stuff!

That's all I have for now. I'll stick around to post with you and answer your questions.

    Your friend,

    Thunderheart

"The Force is an energy field created by all living things.
    It surrounds us, penetrates us,
    ...binds the galaxy together."
    - Obi Wan Kenobi

Editor's Note: I, as do other SWG players, wish you well Thunderheart but it's a sad day for the SWG community.
